1939  
  Founded in 1939,Chung Cheng High School first began as an all-boys school at Kim Yan Road, admitting female students only after World War ll.
   
1947   
 
The school achieved top honours among Singapore schools in the first National Examination in 1947. To accommodate the increase in student population, Mr Lin Shi Wan, the Chairman of the Management Board, purchased a 14-acre plot of land at Goodman Road for a new campus. The school at Kim Yan Road became Chung Cheng High School (Branch) (renamed as Chung Cheng High (Yishun) in 2005).
 
Chung Cheng students were very actively involved in performing arts, in particular drama, since the early days. The completion of the Zhulin Building which houses the Grand Auditorium, helped consolidate its niche in this area. Zhulin Buildingwas named after the founding Principal Dr Zhuang Zhulin.
   
1979   
  1979 was a milestone year for the school as it became a Special Assistance Plan (SAP) school, offering both English and Chinese as first languages to Special Stream students. This helped strengthen Chung Cheng High School (Main)’s emphasis on bilingualism.
   
1992   
  To meet growing demands for better facilities, the school embarked on an upgrading programme in the early 90s. With the completion of the 1st phase of redevelopment in 1992, the Crafts-cum-Technical Complex was added (The Gewu Building).
   
1996   
  Due to its consistently good performance in the GCE 'O' Level Examinations, the school achieved autonomous status in 1996.
   
1997   
  The 2nd phase of redevelopment was completed in 1997 with a newly built 32-classroom block (Hongdao Building), canteen and a multi-purpose hall (Haoran Building). 
   
1999   
  The 3rd phase of school redevelopment ended with the completion of the 16-classroom block in 1999 (ZhuopuBuilding).
   
2003   
 
Excellence in school programmes and administration were affirmed with the attainment of the Singapore Quality Class (SQC) award in 2003.
 
To reflect the glorious past of the school and celebrate the school's commitment to education, the school's Heritage Gallery, a rich repository of our tangible history was declared open in July 2003.

The first “Bazaar by theLake” was organized in July 2003 to promote entrepreneurial spirit in our students and the inculcation of school values. It was also a home coming-event which attracted many alumni back to their alma mater.
   
2004    
  With the strong support from the School Management Committee (SMC), the Alumni, parents and students from Chung Cheng High School Main and Branch Schools, the school staged a large-scale production ‘The Lake Odyssey’ which depicted the school values as its core theme in 2004. This was a significant event as ChungChengHigh School (Main) was the first school to put up a performance at the Esplanade then.
   
2005   
 
In 2005, the school was awarded the “School Distinction Award” in recognition of the well-defined processes that the school put in place which led to sustained achievements in students’ outcomes in the 5 domains (moral, cognitive, physical, social & aesthetic).
 
The Can-Chaining Project put the school in the Guinness Book of Records for the World’s Longest Can-Chaining Project for charity in 2005.
 
The school was accorded the status of East Zone Centre of Excellence for Chinese (EZCOE(CL)) and awarded the Best Practice Award (Teaching & Learning) in 2005. The newly upgraded building “The Innosphere” which houses the EZCOE(CL) and all performing art CCAs was officially opened the following year.
   
2007   
  The school’s autonomous status was reaffirmed and it received recertification for the Singapore Quality Class (SQC) award in 2007.
   
2008   
 
In recognition of the school’ niche and contribution to Wushu, the school was selected by Ministry of Education (MOE), as a Junior Sports Academy (Wushu) in 2008.
   
2009   
 
The school celebrated its 70 th Anniversary in 2009 with a series of events including Zhang Shoushi Calligraphy and Chinese Painting Exhibition, Alumni Art Exhibition, Golf Tournament, Chung Cheng Literary Work Exhibition, Walkathon, and the publication of “Zhongzheng Ren” - a compilation of stories depicting distinguished alumni members. A grand reunion dinner at Suntec Singapore was held on 27 June, graced by then Senior Minister Mr Goh Chok Tong.
 
In 2009, the school took a bold step towards developing a “global outlook” and bi-cultural perspective in our students through the Nanyang-Chung Cheng Collaboration @ Fudan, a collaboration project with Nanyang Girls’ High School and High School Affiliated to Fudan University in Shanghai. This programme is aligned to the 2015 Curriculum Outcomes set by MOE and has since become the signature programme in the school’s internationalization efforts.
 
In recognition of the school’s effort in promoting staff engagement and welfare, the school was awarded Best Practice Award (Staff Well-being) in 2009.
 
   
2010    
 
The school embarked on the “Programme for Rebuilding andImprovingExistingSchools” (PRIME) in 2010. New facilities added included the Indoor Sports Hall (NayunBuilding), expanded classrooms, numerous linkways connecting all buildings in the school compound and others.
 
In recognition of the school’s effort in promoting school-based curriculum “Media Studies in Chinese” over the years, the school was selected to offer ‘O’ level applied subject “Media Studies in Chinese” in 2010.
 
In 2010,Chung Cheng High School (Main) was awarded the School Excellence Award (SEA) and Best Practice Award (Student All-Round Development).SEAis the pinnacle award recognizing all-round excellence under the MOE’s Masterplan of Awards.
   
2011    
  2011 saw the inception of the school’s Talent Development Programme. The objective of the initiative was to nurture talents in the areas of Chinese language and culture, Music, Mathematics and Science. Additional resources were provided for students of the programme, thus enabling them to develop their potential in their areas of interest and talent. Besides that, in recognition of the school’s rich tradition and culture for the Arts, the school was selected by MOE to offer the Enhanced Music Programme from 2011.
   
2012    
 
The school adopted the Balanced Scorecard as a strategic planning and management tool to sharpen its strategic focus in 2012. Charting the school direction forward, four strategic thrusts have been identified, namely ST1 – Providing Student All-round Development; ST2 – Empowering Staff; ST3 – Enhancing Partnership and ST4 – Delivering Organisational Excellence. The “Chung Cheng Scholar” has also been identified as the desired outcome for every student, having the key attributes of a “Confident and passionate bi-cultural learner who is global in outlook” and an “All-round leader with moral integrity who contributes actively to the community.”
 
The school’s inaugural Arts Fest was held from 5 to8 April 2012 with the theme of “roots”. The event showcased the best in both performing arts and visual arts. Other than performances by the performing arts groups, exhibitions and demonstrations related to the visual arts, sand art, as well as calligraphy and Chinese painting were held. The event was a testament to the school’s belief and efforts in promoting the arts, as well as our commitment to nurture Chung Cheng Scholars with a sense of appreciation for the aethetics and humanities.
 
With every new venture that Chung Cheng staff and students embark on, we look forward to scaling greater heights and to continue the legacy of being an Institution of Eminence in the 21 st century.
   
2013    
 
The School celebrated its 74th anniversary and official opening of "Haoran Building" and "Nayun Building" on 20 July 2013. The Guest-of-Honour, Education Minister Mr Heng Swee Keat, launched the school's bilingual "Chung Cheng Heritage Trail Mobile Application" at the occasion.

In 2013, the school was accorded the National Arts Education Award - The Blaze Award by the National Arts Council (NAC). This highest level of award is an affirmation of the school’s continued commitment to providing a holistic and integrated arts education programme for students. The school also attained the top level award - The Lotus Award in the “School Green Awards 2013”. This is in recognition of the school’s holistic approach and continual improvement to environmental management and sustainability.
   
2014    
 
The school’s Administration Building (Zhulin Building) and the Entrance Arch were both gazetted as National Monument. In addition, our alumnus Mr Lim Tze Peng (a distinguished calligrapher and artist and also a Cultural Medallion winner) donated almost a hundred valuable pieces of his works to his alma mater. These pieces have been housed in a “Lim Tze Peng Art Gallery” next to the Chung Cheng Lake, and they will serve to inspire all Chung Cheng students to greater artistic and aesthetical achievements. To foster an ambience of rich cultural setting, a Chung Cheng Cultural Corridor was also constructed. This further complements the existing cultural landscape of the school, which seeks to nurture the next generation of Chung Cheng students with humanistic concerns. On 10th July, the school held its 75th Anniversary Gala Dinner, which was attended by more than 1000 alumni. The Guest-of-Honour, Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong, also officiated at the ceremony to gazette the two buildings as National Monument, as well as the opening of the “Lim Tze Peng Art Gallery”. In line with this, the school also co-organised a public cultural forum with the National Heritage Board. Distinguished local and overseas scholars were invited to share on the cultural value of the Zhulin Building and the Entrance Arch, as well as the importance of monument preservation.

In the same year, the school was accorded five “Best Practices” by the MOE External Validation team for Teaching and Learning, Character and Citizenship Education, Student All-Round Development, Staff Well-Being and Development, as well as School Partnership. In addition, we also received MOES’s top honour for the school excellence journey -- the “School Distinction Award” (SDA). The school was also conferred the status of a “Water Efficient Building” (Silver) by the Public Utilities Board, which affirms the school’s efforts in environmental conservation.
